"Day In Day Out" ("Alle Tage") by Terézia Mora now available in Ukrainian!

I met my good friend and translator from German Chrystyna Nazarkewytsch. She told me a good news: Terézia Mora's novel Day In Day Out (Alle Tage) (2004) in her Ukrainian translation hit the stores! The publisher is Litopys Publishers (Lviv).

...On an early autumn Saturday morning in a neglected playground not far from the railway station three women found the translator Abel Nema dangling from a jungle gym: feet wound round with silver tape, a long, black trench coat covering the head, swinging slightly in the morning breeze...

Terézia Mora was born 1971 in Sopron, Hungary. In 1990
she moved to Berlin, where she studied theater arts and
Hungarian literature at Humboldt University and screenwriting
at the German Film and Television Academy. She has
worked as a translator of contemporary Hungarian literature
and freelance writer since 1998. Her first collection of stories,
Strange Matter (Seltsame Materie, 1999), received rave
reviews, and one of its stories won the prestigious Ingeborg
Bachmann Prize (1999). Her first novel, Day In Day Out (Alle
Tage), was chosen as the best German novel of the year at the
Leipzig Book Fair in 2004. She is widely recognized as one of
the most noteworthy voices of her generation.

"Between Word and Sound"

Yesterday, I was at a contemporary chamber/classical/orchestral music concert I enjoyed very much indeed. The idea behind the Between Word and Sound project was to get 8 young Ukrainian composers create music "based" on any Polish texts (Jerzy Onuch, head of the Polish Institute in Kyїv, joked they could have chosen Polish phone books had they wished so). All of them chose poetry, naturally. The 8 poems are by W.Szymborska, K.Wojtyla, B.Zadura, H.Poswiatkowska, A.Zagajewski, J.Slowacki, M.Podgórnik, and C.Milosz (and the translators into Ukrainian are V.Yashchuk, D.Matiyash, A.Bondar, and D.Pavlychko). One half of the created music (that is 4 pieces of music) was with words from the chosen poem (a soprano singer sang them) and another half (yet another 4 pieces of music) was without words. The result was quite interesting – and inspiring. Also, I took home a fine slim volume with all the poems and translations and info about the event and the participants. This project was already shown in Lublin, Warsaw and Lviv – and will be shown shown in Vinnytsya, Odesa and Kyїv until the end of this week.

Två dikter av Natalka Bilotserkivets

Efter mina tidigare översättningsförsök med Natalka Bilotserkivets dikter (här på WhyTranslator har jag publicerat "Apoteket", "Sten", "Le Vin du solitaire" och - sist - "Sjöjungfrun") tänker jag publicera ännu två dikter av henne: nu i översättning från ukrainska av Sanna Witt.

Dikterna publicerades i tidskrift för litteratur ”ARIEL”, nummer 3, 2000.

FISKEN

Alltid i profil, grå och platt,
sjöjungfrustjärten, ögat galet och grumligt...
Handen som lossar dig från kroken
håller om gälarna självklart och grymt.

Alltid i profil och alltid stum,
den bräckliga kotraden, revbenens klena galler...
Ålderdomen närmar sig. Ingen ro i sinnet
som vant sig vid att ta emot.

Vattnet står stilla i mördarnas kved,
naturen tiger - som den första vreden
skälvde dess inälvors djup.

Håll fast om livet! Det simmar bort
som fisken, lämnar slem och smuts
i handens vattenskål.

***

Där musslan som ett öra i sanden
lyssnar sig till höstens ankomst,
ruttnar sommarens reliker
i ett halvförstört buskage.

Bland cigarettpaket och sprutor
har stjälkarna än böjts, än brutits.
Och på den breda floden västerut
multnar den sista värmens guld.

Den starke bryts - den svage bara
hukar för att resa sig på nytt;

My Ukrainian translation from Swedish of the short story "Legosoldater" ("Mercenaries") by Jonas Hassen Khemiri and a brief literary portrait of the author.

[1] Шведською «найманий солдат» — legosoldat. Авторський lego(lekande)soldat — «солдат, що грається леґо». А наступне kutur/kul tur можна перекласти як «культура/круто пощастило». — Примітка перекладача.

April 13

April 13 is the birthday of two of my favorite writers: Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney. Both are Irish and Nobel laureates and geniuses.

(The most recent Nobel laureate J. M. G. Le Clézio was also born on this day: I haven't read him yet. But one can already find the beginning of Ukrainian translation by Roman Horbyk of his Poisson d'or here: http://translitera.org/2009/ле-клезіо-золота-рибка-1/#more-1508.)

So, happy days!

Beyond One's Twenty Fifth Year

I'm reading Zbigniew Herbert's Barbarian in the Garden in Ukrainian translation by Andriy Pavlyshyn. In his essay "Siena" Herbert cites T.S.Eliot from his "Tradition and the Individual Talent":

[Tradition] cannot be inherited, and if you want it you must obtain it by great labour. It involves, in the first place, the historical sense, which we may call nearly indispensable to anyone who would continue to be a poet beyond his twenty-fifth year; and the historical sense involves a perception, not only of the pastness of the past, but of its presence; the historical sense compels a man to write not merely with his own generation in his bones, but with a feeling that the whole of the literature of Europe from Homer and within it the whole of the literature of his own country has a simultaneous existence and composes a simultaneous order.

A translator beyond my twenty fifth year, I feel the same is true for literary translators as well.
